Blunkett

I made the joke in the previous post cos it was too good to resist but, seriously, am I the only one who thinks this whole thing has been a bit of a mountain out of a molehill situation?

I don't care about the whole affair thing - it's his business, and no-one else's - and the "abuse of power" allegations seem ridiculously lowkey.

So he gave a free train ticket to his partner (which he then repayed) and he may or may not have read the nanny's visa application.

This, to me, seems pretty much like the equivalent of a lawyer giving the Christmas bonus bottle of champagne he was given by his firm to his spouse, and his giving free legal advice to a friend.

I mean, c'mon. Am I missing something here?

Because what he did with the visa amounts to corruption. You shouldn't be able to get things done faster or better because you are sleeping with/related to/friendly with/bribing a politician. Period.
Your example of the lawyer isn't a like-for-like comparison because a lawyer isn't an elected public servant.
What Blunkett did might not have been very serious, but you have to draw the line somewhere - otherwise, would you be saying, and I'm plucking an example at random here, "well, all he did was give better homes to people who promised to vote for his party at the election while making those who didn't live in asbestos-ridden tower blocks, that's just the way politics works, isn't it"?
We all know this kind of thing goes on, but we can't let it pass when it is uncovered - that's the only reason why, despite our politicians being a nasty, self-interested, dishonest bunch, we still live in a free country and not some Democratic People's Republic where you have to be the cousin of a minister before you get clean water to drink.

Yeah, of course you're right :) I've just become a disillusioned idealist, I guess... :)

Ahem. Well I may have been ranting a little. But that's what I do best.
