Happy Valentine's Day, By The Way

Is there anyone out there who actually likes Valentine's Day? It seems to me to be crap on a few different levels.

If you're single, then it's a day of watching smug couples, feeling depressed each time you see roses, and proclaiming that the world just isn't fair.

If you're in a couple, then it seems to be a day of agreeing in advance that it's all a big waste of time - a commercial event designed to sell greetings cards, and one in which you shouldn't participate. Deciding you won't participate. Then getting cold feet the day before in case your partner has decided it's actually a lovely day after all, worrying that you'll appear mean and unromantic, and eventually going out and buying cards, chocolates, teddy bears and Christ knows what else.

Like I say, seems to me no-one is winning other than Clinton Cards.

That said, if anyone wants to send me chocolates or flowers, please don't hesitate.

The thing is, if you're in a couple, and you don't do anything for Valentine's Day, you endup getting paranoid that you're Letting The Romance Die which is of course the number-one thing that all the agony aunts tell you not to do. But if you do celebrate it, you end going out for a really expensive meal that's not as nice as it normally would be because it's a 'special' Valentine's menu, and you sit across the table not talking because you live together, and have therefore said everything you have to say about what's going on in your respective lives while in bed/watching TV/sitting on the toilet while your partner brushes their teeth/etc, surrounded by other couples also not talking and wishing they were at home watching Scrubs. Unless of course you have kids in which case you can always do with some time to yourselves.

Now, does writing comments on someone else's blog while your partner plays the guitar in the next room count as Keeping the Romance Alive or Letting It Die?

For the Sunday before Valentine's Day, Taxloss and I went to the ICA and played Scrabble in the bar. We've only had the Scrabble set for a week and he's already mastered my high-scoring, masterly tactics and used them against me to win. It was a moment when I knew I had met my match, my equal. He is The One.
